Jesus Responds by Speaking Peace to the Chaos

I appreciated receiving the email which included your message from June 21st. That was a busy day for my family & me. It was Father’s Day, of course. It was also Carol’s & my 29th wedding anniversary. We had a F.D./anniversary combo celebration with our boys that afternoon, then I came home & crashed for a while as I worked 11p-7a that night at The Haworth Inn. Not the way I would choose to spend such an auspicious occasion, but we made it work.

Currently, I can identify with the stormy predicament faced by Jesus’ disciples in the Gospel reading. Yesterday, I was informed that I no longer had a full-time job. Again. The wound seems too recent for “Peace, be still”, but I know that is what the Savior is saying. Eventually, I will pick myself up, dust myself off and allow this storm within me to abate.

I’m tempted to say I’m getting too old for all this. Then I think of my 80-year-old dad, who hikes daily, volunteers as a carpenter at The Fort Walla Walla Museum, and does odd jobs for most anyone who asks. His mom still lives. She’s 101 now. My mom just turned 77, and she is a real estate broker, actively running her own business.

I appreciate the unique ministry that you and Christian have brought to Grace. Your family is included in my daily prayers. Please remember Carol and me as I venture, once more, into the job market.

“I thank God every time I remember you.”
    – Philippians 1:3 (ERV)
